What is financial planning?

Most of our clients are initially unfamiliar with financial planning, so we thought we would clarify what we believe financial planning is and is not.

Financial planning is about…

Helping you get to the important numbers. It will show that you have enough money to do the things you want to in life - whether that’s to retire, work less, treat yourself,  pass money to loved ones, or all of the above!
Building a strong, trusting adviser/client relationship over the long term.
Adapting your plan over your lifetime to suit changing needs and circumstances.
Using an easy-to-understand, visual approach to demonstrating your financial future and financial projections.
Adopting a personalised approach to tailor your financial plan to achieve your particular goals.

Financial planning is not about…

Selling you products and leaving you to your own devices.
You simply giving us instructions or expecting us to only 'look after' your investments.
Promising you specific market returns or that we can 'beat the market' for you.

The process

We combine our tried and tested 6-step process with your input to produce a financial plan that is unique to you.
1.

Establish your life goals

We begin by figuring out what you want from life in the short, medium, and long term. This forms the very heart of your financial plan because it is there to help you live the life you want to. We’ll discuss what your goals are, which ones are most important, and when you want to achieve them. Then we will drill down into the details of what these goals will cost, the first step towards creating a plan for achieving them.
2.

Gathering information

The next step is to gather as much information as possible on your current situation, including income and expenditure, assets, and liabilities.
3.

Evaluating your current position

Using this information, we provide you with a ‘family balance sheet’ which is essentially your starting position. This gives us a clear picture of where you are now and what it will take to achieve your goals. We also assess any potential risks or barriers to achieving your goals.
4.

Developing your plan

We begin by figuring out what you want from life in the short, medium, and long term. This forms the very heart of your financial plan because it is there to help you live the life you want to. We’ll discuss what your goals are, which ones are most important, and when you want to achieve them. Then we will drill down into the details of what these goals will cost, the first step towards creating a plan for achieving them.
5.

Implementing your plan

Then it’s time for action. We will begin implementing the agreed upon recommendations, including taking care of all the administration involved with financial products.

Where the recommendations require the services of other professionals, such as lawyers, we are happy to assist where appropriate.
6.

Monitoring and reviewing your plan

Once your recommendations have been implemented, we will regularly review your plan. This ensures that you are remaining on track to achieve your goals and allows you the opportunity to let us know if your situation or goals have changed. Review meetings are usually conducted annually, though they can be more or less frequent where circumstances dictate.
